Comparing Numbers
Learning intention
Compare and order whole numbers using mathematical symbols.
Learn
Compare numbers from the greatest place value first. If the first digits match, move one place to the right until you find a difference.
Worked example
Compare 4,582 and 4,528. The thousands and hundreds match. In the tens place, 8 is greater than 2, so 4,582 is greater than 4,528.
4,582 > 4,528\n4,528 < 4,582\n4,582 = 4,582
Practice
Summary
Use > for greater than, < for less than, and = for equal values. Compare digits from left to right.
