More, fewer, or the same: numbers to 10

This interactive skill helps preschool and early elementary learners compare groups of up to 10 objects. Children learn the meanings of “more,” “fewer,” and “the same number.”

Look at two groups, count the objects in each, and decide whether the comparison in the question is true. One group may contain more objects, fewer objects, or as many as the other.

How to practice:

• Read or listen to the question, such as “Are there as many cubes as suns?” or “Are there fewer houses than books?”
• Count the objects in both groups.
• Answer Yes or No.

Use the speaker button to hear the instructions. This also supports children who are not yet confident readers or find written instructions difficult to follow.

Encourage children to explain an answer in a complete sentence: “Four is greater than three,” “Two is less than five,” or “Three is equal to three.” This helps them use comparison language accurately.

If counting alone is difficult, match the objects in pairs, one from each group. A group with unpaired objects has more. If every object has a partner, the groups have equal numbers.

Children learn to use counting results to compare quantities. Larger numbers represent more objects, smaller numbers represent fewer, and equal numbers represent equally sized groups.
