Take away cubes and solve to 5
This skill uses cubes to show the meaning of subtraction within 5. Start with a group, take away the stated number, and find how many are left.
How to practice:
- Read or listen to the question, such as “Start with 5 cubes. Remove 2 cubes.”
- Tap the cubes you need to remove.
- Choose an answer from 0 to 5, then tap Check.
- Tap Help if you need a hint about the calculation.
Use the speaker button to hear the instructions. This also supports children who are not yet confident readers or find written instructions difficult to follow.
The questions become more challenging gradually. Begin with small groups and move on to subtraction within 5, including examples with zero cubes left.
The visual model shows how a group becomes smaller when objects are removed. Children connect objects, numbers, and subtraction equations, while practicing attention, counting, reasoning, and checking their work.
