Add with cubes to 10

This skill introduces addition within 10. Combine two small groups of cubes, find the total, and connect quantities with an addition equation.

This is a next step after adding within 5. Children count larger groups, find the sum of two numbers, and begin to remember number bonds to 10.

How to practice:

• Read or listen to the question, such as “There are 3 blue cubes and 2 green cubes. How many cubes are there altogether?”
• Tap the answer showing the total number of cubes.
• Tap Help for counting hints.

Use the speaker button to hear the instructions. This also supports children who are not yet confident readers or find written instructions difficult to follow.

The cubes provide a visual model. Children see quantities as well as numerals and mathematical signs: adding means joining groups to find how many objects there are altogether.

The questions practice attention, visual recognition, memory, reasoning, concentration, and checking answers. Count each cube once and correct mistakes independently.

Working through the instructions in order prepares children for school tasks. After becoming confident with addition within 10, move on to adding within 20, calculations without pictures, and simple word problems.
