Expanded Form

Learning intention

Represent numbers by the value of each digit.

Learn

A digit has a value based on its position. Expanded form writes a number as the sum of those place values.

Worked example

In 6,482, the 6 means 6,000, the 4 means 400, the 8 means 80, and the 2 means 2. Therefore 6,482 = 6,000 + 400 + 80 + 2.

Thousands: 6 | Hundreds: 4 | Tens: 8 | Ones: 2

Practice

Summary

Read each digit by its place, then add the place values to write expanded form.
