Properties of Shapes
Learning intention
Describe and classify 2D shapes using their properties.
Learn
We can classify a 2D shape by properties such as its number of sides, vertices, equal sides, parallel sides, and right angles.
Worked example
A square has 4 equal sides, 4 vertices, and 4 right angles. Those properties distinguish it from many other quadrilaterals.
Triangle: 3 sides | Quadrilateral: 4 sides | Pentagon: 5 sides | Hexagon: 6 sides

Summary
Use several properties—not only appearance—to identify and compare 2D shapes.
